The war department reports Japan urges renewed pressure on General MacArthur's defenses on the Bataan Peninsula. Without strong reinforcements, plans to hold the Philippines look grim as Japan controls air and sea. Java and Sumatra risk fall without timely Allied planes and transports. The Burma front advances threaten Rangoon and the rail link to China.
Funeral services for Richard Almond 69 of Prosperity will be held Saturday at 2 p m in the Prosperity church with Dr J L Lineweaver pastor of Beckley Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the Prosperity cemetery. Surviving are his widow Martha Almond five brothers and three sisters all in England and two grandchildren. The body will lie at Williams Givens Funeral Home Chapel until Friday afternoon then at the residence in Prosperity awaiting the funeral. Active pallbearers include Chick O NeaL William Speake Hugh Webb Johnny Williams Albert Williams and Charlie Powell.
The Associated Press reports 182 Japanese ships sunk or damaged by February 14, with American forces credited for 84 sinkings 15 probables and 28 damaged ships, and NEI forces with 24 sinkings six probables and 11 damaged. The tally covers battleships cruisers destroyers submarines transports cargo vessels and tankers.
A Navy release said three West Virginians are among 2,210 service members and civilians held as prisoners of war by Japan. Private Lord Jonas Bragg of Dunbar and Private Elbert Samuel Perkins of Dunbar were captured on Wake Island and Guam respectively, with civilian Frank Hastie of Charleston also listed. Mrs. Martin Bragg of Richwood had only word of hope, noting her son’s December letter and earlier “Missing in action” markings.
Gulf Mining Company workers at Crab Orchard contribute 83 dollars and United Mine Workers Local 5767 members at Helen give 54 dollars to the Raleigh County Red Cross War Fund. The total rises to 6083.90 with additional gifts from the February American Legion Auxiliary refreshment committee 10 dollars Princewick PTA secretary 5 dollars American Legion Auxiliary 1.50 dollars Koppers Coal Company employees 3 dollars and Eatwell Case staff 15 dollars. Roll Cal membership reaches 5091 with the Crab Orchard Gulf Mining employees adding 33 dollars.
Snow flurries move through West Virginia with cold conditions persisting through today and early tonight keeping temperatures low and winds brisk in many areas.
Washington lawmakers push bills to raise base pay from 21 to 42 dollars monthly and expand officer pay. Aimed family allowances total 15 dollars from soldiers and 15 dollars from the government, with longer service up to 207 dollars for a master sergeant. Edmiston cites wartime standards and warns of a White House delay.
Senator George of Georgia challenged plans to raise 7 billion dollars in the coming fiscal year by broadening income tax bases or adding a sales or payroll levy. The army recruiting station sent two men yesterday and one today to an army reception center. Named were William Robert Sensabaugh Mabscott Ernie Edward Eskew Dry Creek and James C Dinkler Beckley. Navy applicants accepted at the local recruiting station were James M McClung Alderson Paul Steward Carlisle Fort Springs and George Washington Hatfield Carlisle as announced by Petty Officer John McDorman.
Charley Frye was arrested by Constable Howard Keatley and John McDowell and charged with statutory rape. He waived a hearing before Magistrate Oley Mills yesterday and was held to the grand jury.
Russians anticipate news of widespread Soviet gains on the 24th anniversary of the Red Army. Officials cite steady winter advances, preparations for arms production boosts, and public campaigns as workers, students, and freight flows support the war effort against Germany.
James F. Houchins 75 a Beckley carpenter and contractor filed for nonpartisan election to one of two six year board of education terms in the August primary. He is the county's first board candidate joining C L Harvey and Ben F Meadows who already entered county court races. A Monroe County native, Houchins has lived in Beckley about 20 years and is known for community work.
Reports note a longtime board member at seventy five continuing to work as a carpenter here. He stays unusually engaged in civic projects and community activity despite age.
More than 100 Japanese bombers and escort fighters attacked Darwin in two waves today. Prime Minister Curtin said 72 bombers were in the morning raid and 21 in the afternoon, with some ships and installations damaged and unknown casualties. The strike underscores Darwin’s strategic role as a fleet base and supply gateway for the defense of Australia as Japan presses southward.
Three Negro boys Bernard Dixon Manuel Richardson and Marvin Walker were arrested by Constable Howard Keatley on charges of grand larceny and released from jail today by Magistrate Oleg Mills while two more suspects are sought in connection with the crime.
The Senate civil service committee voted 4 to 2 to send the repeal bill to the floor, stepping ahead of the House in the pension repeal for members of Congress. The measure would exclude Congress members, the president, the vice president, and cabinet officers from the civil service retirement system, with repayment of any already made benefits within 30 days.

The Bituminous Coal Division issued an order to equalize minimum prices for coal mined in Ohio and Daviess County Kentucky and shipped by truck. It raises minimum mine prices for 23 Ohio county mines by 20 cents a ton for certain domestic sizes and 15 cents for small sizes, while lowering minimum prices for 11 truck mines in Daviess County to achieve parity. The previously held price differentials, set due to highway access, are removed as roads improve.
