Nearly 2000 Complete Hike From Pittsburgh to Washington
About 1,975 hikers finished a 30 mile walk from Pittsburgh to Washington, Pennsylvania. The group started at Gateway Center and grew from 1,000 to five thousand along the route. Dozens were treated for fatigue and cold, while crowds lined Route 19 to view the march. The Washington Jefferson College campus hosted the end, with a Mt. Lebanon restaurant serving thousands of sandwiches and coffee. Disc jockey Clark Race organized the event and summed up the mood with the remark, Thank God it's over with.
