Moscow AP Premier Khrushchev warned the West that any attempt to force West Berlin by land air or sea means war with the Soviet Union. He said East German territory centered on Berlin cannot be encroached upon and that shooting would trigger war. Tass released the speech made Tuesday at Tula 120 miles south of Moscow. Western powers seek a Big Four ministerial meeting on Germany this spring but have not set action if the Soviets hand East Germany control of Allied supply routes. Reports mention armed convoys or an airlift to defy East Germany while allies insist traffic is a Soviet occupation responsibility.

George Ballard Dies After Auto Wreck
George W. Ballard 60 died at 10 20 a m in a local hospital from injuries after a wreck on the West Virginia Turnpike near Milepost 60 south of Mossy. A former Pinecrest Sanitarium business manager, Ballard had served as attache to State Senator Ward Wylie during the 54th Legislature. He led a long career in medicine and Democratic Party circles, helped expand Pinecrest to a 644 bed facility, and Ballard Stadium was named in his honor. He is survived by his wife Lucy Bower, a son in Raleigh North Carolina, a daughter in Knoxville Tennessee, three grandchildren and siblings. The body is at Webb and Neal Funeral Home awaiting arrangements.

Two Men Sentenced in Raleigh County Jail Case
Two East Park men, Nathaniel Reynolds and Bill Turner, were fined 25 dollars and costs each and sentenced to six months in the Raleigh County Jail after pleading guilty before Magistrate Cotton White to drunk and petit larceny. Turner’s charge shifted from possession of stolen goods to petit larceny during the hearing. Reynolds allegedly took socks from W. T. Grant Co. on Neville Street and passed them to Turner for storage.

Wreck Injures Stanaford Man on Tams Mountain
Stanaford resident Boyd Baisden, an employee of the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co., was injured early today when his vehicle went out of control in fog and plunged over an embankment on Tams Mountain. He underwent surgery at Raleigh General Hospital and was listed in satisfactory condition with a broken left leg and right hand lacerations. State Police were alerted at 7 a.m. by a coal miner.
