The Governors Manse White House of West Virginia
The West Virginia Executive Mansion, built in 1923, risks costive repairs after neglect by temporary occupants and budget cuts. Architect Walter Martens praises Mrs. Hulett C. Smith for uncovering dangers, crediting her bravery for preventive fixes that save the house from fire or asphyxiation during gatherings. The Smith administration spent 140000 last year and 88000 this year to modernize and stabilize the mansion, with 126000 more needed to replace a shrinking garden wall, funds unlikely before 1968 per political prudence. Improvements include power and gas line upgrades, seat lines, steel braces, and cone floors to prevent electrical overloads.
