Tragic Gob Pile Blast Kills Shockey Near Summerlee
A 24 year old State Road Commission worker Kenneth Shockey died after a gob pile blast engulfed his truck in searing heat. Fellow workers Jack Halstead and Hermal Fink suffered burns but survived. Explosions sent flames across the road and damaged nearby trucks as a gas pocket formed beneath the burning slate. Oak Hill Fire Department battled heat as rescuers tried to reach Shockey who screamed for about 20 minutes before succumbing. Fink and Halstead were treated at Oak Hill Hospital.
