Study Finds WV police forces dangerously thin in counties
A three month study by the Police Advisory Commission for West Virginia finds police manpower far below national averages across all 55 counties. Governor Hulett C. Smith's panel calls for at least 3 million dollars for smaller counties and 700,000 for larger towns to meet minimal standards, with Charleston and other cities highlighted as underserviced. The report notes factors such as fulltime deputy sheriffs and county administrative duties skewing staffing, urging strengthened statewide law enforcement to reach national norms.
