Cigarette Tax Collections Up Statewide
Charleston report shows the State Tax Department collecting nearly seven million dollars from the cigarette tax in the first seven months of the fiscal year, a 21.2 percent rise driven largely by the July 1 tax increase from five to six cents per pack. The 1962 Legislature kept the higher rate through 1962-63. Soft drink tax receipts rose 2.9 percent to about two point zero seven million dollars in the same period.

A 13 year old from Cicero admits setting the December 1 1958 Our Lady of the Angels School fire killing 95. lie detector witness John E Reid testified the boy gave an eight page statement after a January 12 examination claiming he threw three matches into a basement trash barrel. Pope John XXIII will celebrate a private Mass in the Vatican chapel for the late Aloysius Joseph Cardinal Muench. The Milwaukee born cardinal, 72, died of cardial circulatory collapse after illness from Parkinson’s disease and complications. He served 24 years as Fargo archbishop bishop and as apostolic nuncio to Germany after World War II. He was created cardinal on December 14, 1959, and was the first American Cardinal in the curia.

Sophia Weddle Dies After Planning Funeral at Sophia
Mrs. Maritha Madeline Weddle, 35, of Sophia, died of cancer at 3 a.m. in a local hospital eight months after falling ill. A mother of five, she had calmly arranged her funeral and burial plans with her husband Loman Weddle. Born in McAlpin on September 6, 1927, she was the daughter of Troy Ring and the late Delta Ring. Surviving: her husband, five children Roger Dale, Carol Sue, Donna Kay, Nancy, and a son, plus two sisters and a grandmother. Funeral services set for Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Sophia Free Will Baptist Church, with burial at Hot Coal Cemetery. The body remains at Williams Funeral Home in Sophia after 4 p.m. Saturday.
