Allied authority shifts to Badoglio government in southern Italy
Allied authorities relinquish civil control of southern Italy Sicily and Sardinia and transfer conditional governance to the Badoglio government. Gen Sir Henry Wilson notes two limits including that administration must reflect Allied sympathies and provincial faith, with no binding Allied commitment to Badoglio and King Vittorio Emanuele. Badoglio pledges to surrender powers when Rome is liberated. War demands force cancellation of nearly two billion dollars in auto industry contracts.
