The Raleigh County Library faces possible closure as the County Court funds the library for the new fiscal year only through emergency measures. Board members warned without ongoing support from the court, Board of Education, and City of Beckley, operations may end July 1.
An airliner wreck and rescue sweep off Long Island sought 84 victims after Eastern Air Lines Flight 663 crashed into the Atlantic near Kennedy Airport. Eight bodies were recovered. observers reported a violent post impact explosion and wreckage spread over a 200 square mile area.
Hollywood press honors crown My Fair Lady with best musical. Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews win acting and directing recognitions, while George Cukor earns best director for the film. Anne Bancroft takes best dramatic performance for The Pumpkin Eater. Peter O'Toole also garners a Globe.
A mob of about 3000 Asian and Russian students clashed with police at the U S Embassy in Moscow protesting American raids on North Vietnam. Windows were shattered, two reporters were injured, and police failed to prevent widespread damage as demonstrators shouted anti U S imperialism.
Chinese Peoples Daily quotes Beijing saying the army is in battle array awaiting a U.S. invasion of North Viet Nam. The threat follows U.S. air raids and warns Washington of heavy rebuffs if it extends the war. Moscow plans to boost propaganda as regional tension rises.
Identical bills to raise teacher salaries to curb outbound moves to better positions were to be reported to the floor of the House and Senate. Senate Finance Chairman Hans McCourt and House Finance Chairman Del. Ivor Boiarsky met to discuss the measure.
Charleston UPI reports the Senate Medicine and Sanitation Committee will hold a public hearing Monday on a proposed dangerous drug bill drafted by the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy. Co sponsored by Sen. David Mullins and Senate President Howard Carson, the bill tightens control of narcotics and so called pep pills, outlines who may possess sell or purchase them, sets rules and penalties, and empowers searches by law enforcement.

West Virginia House may debate a bill to abolish capital punishment. Del. Jesse Barker and Del. Robert Holliday push the measure, with a possible amendment to impose death for murder while serving a life term. The proposal would be a committee substitute for the Senate version by Sen. Paul Kaufman.
The House Temperance Committee will hold a public hearing Thursday afternoon to discuss the controversial bottle club bill. Committee chairman Kelly Castleberry said the meats was requested by Rev. L. E. Crowson, a South Charleston minister and leading dry spokesman in the state, and will be held immediately after adjournment Thursday. Crowson has also requested a hearing on the resolution calling for a state wide sweepstakes. It will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday by the House Judiciary Committee.
United Press International reports a Navy jet crash at Boardman Oregon bombing range killed three. The same night five major air mishaps were logged including a Kennedy Airport DC7B crash and an emergency landing after a Canary Islands DC7 takeoff.
Rome civil court declared the Andrea Loren and Carlo Ponti marriage null, leaving the pair open to bigamy charges. Ponti remains legally married to Giuliana Fiastri, whom he wed in 1946 and with whom he had two children. The couple, both in France, seek a valid marriage abroad.
In San Francisco hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside a federal building to protest U.S. action. The event began Monday afternoon with about 30 youthful pickets who identified themselves as members of the May 2nd Committee, carrying placards and chanting.
President Johnson seeks no wider war but has altered ground rules by pledging swift retaliation against North Vietnam for Viet Cong attacks and allowing the South Vietnamese air force a major strike across the 17th parallel. He ordered dependents home to remove hostages and quieted calls for withdrawal, while signaling a tougher posture to deter critics. Page 9 references follow.
United Nations diplomats report Soviet objections delaying the formation of a negotiating group to resolve the U.N. financial crisis. The General Assembly may adjourn for several weeks, possibly not reconvening until September, unless talks machinery is established beforehand. The dispute centers on Russia and France debts.
In Mullens a city special levy election proceeds with low turnout. Of 2700 registered voters, the levy that funds street and fire departments and playground must be renewed every three years without raising taxes, shaping city services during the vote.
Charles Hodel publisher of the Raleigh Register and Beck ley Post-Herald remains in unchanged, critical condition after a stroke at his home. He was admitted to Raleigh General Hospital early Friday morning for treatment and observation.
President Johnson still hopes to exchange visits this year with the new Soviet leaders despite ongoing military action. White House press secretary George E. Reedy said there has been no change in the president’s expressed position.
Charleston report says a constitutional amendment would replace the Board of Public Works budget with a legislative budget. Del. Ivor Boiarsky sponsors the plan seeking a 1966 general election vote after two-thirds Legislature approval. The governor would prepare the budget with no cap on lawmakers’ power to alter recommendations, but changes to the bill would be limited by existing constraints.
