Freight Surcharge Petitions to ICC to Suspend 15 Cent Rate
The chamber of commerce urged the Interstate Commerce Commission to suspend at once the 15 cent excess freight rate on lake coal shipments that expires June 30. Northwest buyers fear the price will curb Smokeless Coal access to the lakes and push them to seek early purchases for next winter. Smokeless mine operators have pressed the ICC, with broader regional business backing, to remove the surcharge to ease supplies and costs.
