Avalanches in the Swiss Alps stranded hundreds of tourists and isolated 1500 construction workers at a hydroelectric project. Eight people are dead as snow slides from Mt Mellise hit the Italian hamlet of Rochemolles near St Gotthard and Zermatt routes. Twenty of 35 houses in Rochemolles were destroyed with fears of more burials.
State and local police probe the death of Willard Foley of Reed town near Amigo who was killed late Sunday night. Foley died on arrival at Wyoming General Hospital after being shot in the upper chest and neck. The body was moved from the Basin home of Foley’s father in law Ellis McKinney to Robertson and Foglesong Funeral Home Mullens around 8 p.m.
New York police say Patricia Kennedy Lawford refused to file a robbery complaint that could prosecute four Canadian suspects tied to a $31,000 jewel theft from her hotel suite. Detectives had pursued her for days, but she would not meet with them, and the case will be sent to the district attorney for legal considerations.
In Charleston West Virginia a bill to revamp the states commercial feed law was introduced in the Senate. Senator O Roy Parker sponsored the measure from the State Agriculture Department proposing continued registration of feeds and a new 20 cent per ton quarterly fee for feed distributors to fund sampling and testing. Additional bills would extend mine site restoration requirements and create $1 duplicate hunting and fishing license issuance. A pesticide control measure identical to a House bill last week was also proposed.

President Kennedy was invited to speak at Wheeling's March 10 jubilee marking the 125th Wheeling city charter grant by Virginia. The invitation, sent by Vice Mayor Charles L. Ihlenfeld, seeks attendance by Govs Barron and Almond, and Senators Randolph and Byrd, plus West Virginia lawmakers. The letter notes Kennedy’s primary victory as a state of significance in his path to the presidency.
A major storm moved eastward across the Great Plains threatening heavy snow and sleet from eastern Oklahoma through Arkansas Missouri into the Ohio Valley and Tennessee. A Selective Service official notes the average induction age remains 23, with no involuntary drafts under 22. In Luanda Governor Silva Tavares calls the Friday assault on four buildings a doomed mad adventure. In Detroit auto layoffs, Leonard Betancourt hopes President Kennedy will restore full employment.
Gov Barron proposes a $15 million income tax bill expected to clear its first hurdle this week. Senate Finance Chairman Hans McCourt plans to move it from committee to the floor by Tuesday. If no hitch arises, the measure could pass the Senate by Thursday or Friday with House action likely later in the week.
