Funeral services conducted for Dr James Raymond Gorman a Lynchburg physician and WWI veteran who died after a short illness. Lester Woman Suffered Heart Attack in Wreck

Lula Keaton of Lester suffered a heart attack in a car crash on West Virginia Route 54 near Glen White at 10 35 a m. She was a passenger in Edna Birchfield's vehicle which slid on snow, hit a parked car owned by Edith Allen, and then rolled down an embankment. Police said Keaton is in fair condition at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital as investigation continues.

County Clerk Reports January Fee and Tax Totals

County Clerk Fred Stacy reports January collections totaling 5897.50, versus December at 6573.13. Of the total, 45 went to the state for marriage licenses, 665 for hunting and fishing licenses, and 2930.40 for transfer tax, leaving 2257.10 for the county. Recording fees totaled 1249.65, copy fees 665, executor cases 50, administrator cases 55, guardian cases 13, marriage licenses 125, hunting and fishing 700.75, miscellaneous 8, and state transfer tax 2930.40.

Three-Car Wreck on US 1921 Causes Injuries and Damage

A three car collision Sunday at 8:15 p m on U S 1921 near Shady Spring injured two people and caused about 2500 in damage. John Robert Thompson 23 of Cleveland Ohio was admitted to Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital with a broken kneecap. Rose Mary Thompson 19 of Peters town treated and released for facial cuts. Seabirt E Campbell 54 of Shady Spring was cited for turning left into oncoming traffic. Campbell car sustained 1500 damage while Thompson and Lane cars sustained 300 and 700 respectively.

Refusing Duty Gets Lt Ousted in Vietnam Case

1st Lt. Harold Bernt of Montclair New Jersey, a Dartmouth ROTC officer, was dismissed by a one man court martial for refusing to serve in Vietnam. Col. Richard W. Snyder ordered the discharge, deemed equivalent to a dishonorable discharge for an enlisted man, with loss of military benefits and potential six month confinement. Bernt allegedly refused a transfer to Vietnam after his conscientious objector status was denied.

The body of 37 year old John B Pack ex Beckley schoolteacher found murdered in his Tallahassee Florida apartment is returning to Beckley. Two ex convicts were captured after a chase and charged with the murder. Pack taught at Florida High School and was working on a Florida State University doctorate.
