Portland and Oregon City rocked by dynamite blasts targeting parked hauler trucks used by firms for the Oregonian and Oregon Journal. No deaths or injuries reported. Police found an unexploded charge in a cab. unions previously struck the papers on Nov. 10.
The Defense Department said a second Soviet missile was fired into the Central Pacific Sunday. A U S Navy patrol plane saw what appeared to be a missile entering the atmosphere near the expected impact area around noon. Details on appearance or effects were not released.
Algerian revolt closes with Charles de Gaulle's policy intact as Pierre La Gaillarde leads about 200 insurgents from Algiers University. The demoralized group mutters of continued action fade as crowds cheer and a French flag is paraded. Helicopters circle as the uprising collapses.
AP reports Bricktop legendary cabaret operator seeks a San Francisco site for Bricktop s USA a chic exclusive and expensive night club. At 65 she plans to search local venues while visiting the Fairmont Hotel and may discuss a life film in Jolly Hollywood before returning to Rome. Major General Randolph C Berkeley aged 85 former Marine elder statesman died of heart ailment in Beaufort South Carolina. S De Witt Clough 80 former Abbott Laboratories president died in Chicago. Dr William Norwood Brigance 63 head of Wabash College speech department died in Crawfordsville. Ted Crawford Biggs 87 former US solicitor general and prominent North Carolina lawyer died after long illness.
Tulsa AP report says the government opens its case against 29 major oil firms charging conspiracy to fix oil and gasoline prices in violation of federal antitrust laws.
West Virginia shows mostly sunny conditions with highs 50s in the west and 40s in the east. Tonight partly cloudy with lows near 26 to 30. Tomorrow turns cloudy and cooler with a chance of rain or snow by Wednesday into Friday, totaling about a quarter inch. Beckley highs around 50s yesterday, lows near 26, Oak Hill highs near 52, lakes and greens clear with gauge at 2.5 feet.
Rescue teams recovered 25 miners after a gas explosion at Yubari’s north Japan coal mine. Eighteen still trapped 3600 feet underground as flames burned nearly four hours. Nine crawled to safety, ten rescued despite fire, one seriously hurt. Survivors described escaping through smouldering passages. Negotiations for more rescues continued amid cold and snow.
Nobel laureate Linus Pauling endured a brutal 24 hours on a Monterey County cliff high above the Pacific. He was rescued unharmed after getting lost on his ranch inspection and wandering to a steep path he could not find out from.
In Batesville Arkansas a four year old boy named Terry Pierce rode a city bus bumper for five blocks Sunday before letting go and being killed. Police Chief Jim Mitchem said he clung to the bumper to avoid being run over and dropped under the wheels when the bus turned a corner. Driver Lloyd Pierce was unaware of the child's struggle and cried when stopped by a motorist and informed of the tragedy.
In Moundsville Z A Zamoon and daughter Bertha closed the family soda fountain early, sparing them as a truck leased by Glenn Cartage Co of Pittsburgh demolished their building at midnight. A bystander said the driver Merlin McKinney blacked out. Three children in an upstairs apartment escaped with a fright. Virginia Zervos is their mother.
Washington AP reports Congress nears action on two bills to mark the 100th anniversary of the Pony Express. One would authorize a commemorative medal and the other name 1960 as Pony Express Year. A 1966 mile rerun is planned July 19 with relays between Sacramento and Saint Joseph.
