Federal Black Lung Benefits To Be Administered By Social Security

Coal miners disabled by black lung and survivors may apply for benefits under the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act at any Social Security office. Benefits may be retroactive to filing. payments begin after congressional funding. Applications by mail should name the miner and include social security number if available plus contact details. Director To Leave CBDP In January

Terry Bott, director of the Cooperative Business Development Program in Beckley, resigns effective January. The West Virginia Tech Foundation has screened 43 applicants for a new director, with three remaining. Bott seeks a more permanent future and will stay until a successor is found.

Nixon to Spend Quiet New Year at California Home

President Nixon arrived in California for a two week stay at the Western White House and plans a low key family New Year’s Eve. Holdup Men Net Over 30000 In Army Payroll Heist

Two men in fatigues robbed an Army pay roll officer at Ft Meade and escaped with more than 30000. They were last seen along Route 175 near the Washington Baltimore Parkway armed with revolvers and carrying boxes. A captain and an enlisted man were unharmed and released near the post. The robbed car was abandoned as the robbers fled.

Slayer of Valerie Percy May Be Dead

A convicted robber claims an accomplice who is now dead confessed the Valerie Percy slaying. The 1966 Kenilworth murder sparked a $50,000 reward as Fred Malchow, 40, allegedly confessed to Harold Evans, 24, tied to a tape robbery. Evans was arrested in Chicago. the claim remains unproven.

Willard Jasper Cook 32 of Chicago formerly of Sophia died Monday in Robert Long Hospital Indianapolis after an auto truck collision near Versailles. Final rites for Dewey H. Ellison in Crab Orchard

Dewey H. Ellison of Crab Orchard died Tuesday at 1 30 p m after a long illness in a local hospital. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 10 30 a m at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with Elder A G Nichols officiating. Burial follows at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. He was born April 7 1898 at Camp Creek son of the late James Isaac Ellison and Elizabeth Brammer Ellison. He was a member of the Church of Zion Beckley and UMWA Local 7086 Crab Orchard.
