Hillbilly Ed Admits Blunder In Kennedy Meeting Tale

West Virginia Hillbilly editor Jim Comstock recalls Jan 13 1960 Charleston West Virginia encounter with Ted Kennedy at the Daniel Boone Hotel press reception. He learned from a trusted source that Eleanor Roosevelt and Adlai Stevenson aimed to back Stevenson in the Democratic primary. Comstock chose not to mislead the Kennedy aide, fearing West Virginia's anti Catholic history and Kennedy’s weak prospects. He then introduced Jake Neil to the Kennedy visitor and left, choosing not to dampen the young man’s aspirations. Moral: never underestimate the Kennedy charm.
