FBI Director J Edgar Hoover told reporters that new laws and surveillance tools boost law enforcement against organized crime. He cited immunity for witnesses and court-approved electronic surveillance as strengthening federal action in gambling loan-sharking and hoodlum cases, with optimism for future results.
Israel carried out a three hour raid into Jordan after a weekend of air strikes. The Jordanian command said the attack hit a radar site 27 miles north of Amman, killing five including four soldiers and wounding eight. Egypt reported two Israeli planes were down, a claim Israel denied. The clashes followed multiple incursions and an ambush that killed an American tourist.
European bodies battle a sweeping Asian flu outbreak with thousands dead and millions ill. France and Italy report easing, Britain and Scandinavia see rising cases, and Oslo reports royal illness. Italy deaths reach about 5,000 with widespread pneumonia-linked fatalities. Yugoslavia sees millions ill and thousands dead.
In Weston a two year old girl named Cinda West died in a house fire that also injured her father David West who was severely burned while trying to rescue her. West saved two other children as flames swept through the five room frame house and investigators later found Cinda's body in the kitchen debris. The father was reported in fair condition at a local hospital.
Virginia Burke a senior from Elkins was elected the first student body president of West Virginia University School of Nursing. The announcement comes from Morgantown and is reported by UPI.
New York archaeologist Dr. Iris C. Love reports finding the site of Knidos famed Aphrodite. Excavations at Knidos on the Turkish Aegean coast uncover a circular temple believed to hold the famous nude statue by Praxiteles. Fifty two copies exist, the original sought for 200 years.
Allied field reports say B52s bombed northwest of Saigon as guerrillas pressed a two day raid sequence. An early Sunday assault on a US 25th Infantry bivouac left seven Americans dead and five wounded, the heaviest U.S. loss in six weeks. Additional strikes killed five government troops and left 13 missing at Suoi Ca hamlet. The Mekong Delta region suffered an ongoing guerrilla campaign with civilian casualties and attacks on a restaurant in Vinh Long Province.
The Nixon administration plans a new tax package to help U S firms face foreign competition while raising about 5 billion for domestic programs. Details are tentative but it would likely go to Congress next year for passage to offset revenue losses from 1972 tax reform.
The Christmas holiday weekend claimed three lives on West Virginia highways and six other deaths occurred in nearby states, pushing the statewide toll to 530 for the year. Victims include David Ambrose Fetterman 22 of Burgettstown Pa who died when his tractor trailer crashed near Weirton and Mary Ann Daniels 15 of Dunbar who died from injuries Friday night. Also killed were George Early Acord 57 and Elizabeth Aileen Acord 49 of St Albans in a collision on U S Route 60 east of Clifton Forge Va and Lawrence Bright 45 of Morgantown who died from injuries when his tractor trailer jackknifed near Pittsburgh. William Ted Wilson 22 of Cleveland Ohio died in a Christmas Eve accident.
In McDowell County near Northfork Utah Will Constance 57 was killed in an outdoor gunfight with a 19 year old girl Wanda Jones after an argument inside his home. The girl fired a shotgun from under her coat wounding herself and was treated at Welch hospital. No charges were filed pending investigation.
Four Seasons Nursing Center in Beckley faces postponement as officials shift focus to northern state nursing homes including Fairmont Parkersburg Moundsville and a northern panhandle site. The Beckley project would be a 106 bed four wing complex costing about 750000 with eight homes required by October 1970 per the franchise contract.
Steelmakers surveyed by Steel Magazine foresee a strong first quarter of 1970 but project the year to miss 1969’s pace. Raw production may slip from 131 million to 124 million tons, while finished steel shipments in 1970 are seen dropping to about 88 million tons. Imports may rise in 1970 as world demand remains strong. In contrast a separate report notes a slight holiday-week dip in raw output and a sharp rise in scrap prices.

Ray, escorted in handcuffs to the courtroom, urged that his near solitary confinement is cruel and unusual punishment. He alleged a deal between Percy Foreman and prosecutors to keep him in maximum security, while authorities defend the confinement as necessary for safety.
Prosperity residents Patricia Sue Hutchinson and another are defendants in a suit arising from a Stanford Road wreck on July 24. Jessie Rohy Meadows seeks 46 000 in damages for injuries to a passenger in a car driven by Mrs. T Hutchinson, alleging the vehicle struck a utility pole. Meadows also seeks 17 000 for medical expenses and domestic help costs.
New York report cites psychiatrist Theo Theodore Isaac Rubin in Ladies Home Journal saying food addiction is harder for the obese to cope with than alcohol or drugs. He notes hunger triggers stronger cravings, withdrawal during dieting, and the need for motivation and insight to diet successfully.
