Washington sources say the United States may consider a declared pause in raids on North Vietnam if it yields a meaningful response. No official comment from White House or State Department, and no clear peace feeler from Hanoi or Beijing.
UPI reports a four day ceasefire offer from the Viet Cong broadcast on Liberation Radio during Tet lunar new year. Washington gave no comment while clashes continued as Hanoi ignored the 12 hour extension. The Tet period in Vietnam runs January 20 to 24 and marks the year of the horse.
Grimsby England United Press International reports ships and helicopters searched the North Sea with fading hopes of locating eight missing after the Sea Gem oil rig collapsed. Thirteen men died, nineteen survivors rescued, many offshore on Christmas leave, while weather hindered recovery efforts and investigations into the cause continued.
Washington reports Rep Harris, a committee chairman appointed last summer, announced plans to resign by February 3. He said stepping down would open the House seat to a minority or Republican candidate, though he called it not in the public interest to continue.
Police and FBI recovered 324000 in negotiable bonds from the Hopewell Township estate of Dr Basil Owens in Beaver County. Only 6300 in cash remained missing after searches found 279000 in bonds in a wooded area near the home and 45000 in bonds in Raccoon Creek. Hopewell Township Police Chief Unis provided the update.
A Florida man opened fire in Bellevue Hospital maternity ward injuring his common law wife and a doctor, police said. Natividad Serra no of West Hollywood, Florida, was involved as the assailant, with authorities detailing the chaotic incident and injuries.
Philippi West Virginia addition to the year toll shows 11th state holiday fatality with Ka gua Oida of New York City fatally injured when his car failed to control on a curve near here. The death raises the state's road toll to 473, 11 more than last year and six over the total 1964 period.

A 400 strong leftist student rally near the airport prompts police action but no injuries or arrests are reported. He plans to meet Emperor Hirohito at the Imperial Palace and then proceed to Manila for the inauguration of President Ferdinand Marcos.
A powerful storm with near 100 mph winds swept Washington Oregon and Idaho bringing heavy rain and snow and sparking power outages. The Weather Bureau warned of up to 6% inches of rain at Cape Blanco and 5 to 13 inches at Brookings while Crescent City logged over two inches in six hours. Residents stocked candles and kerosene as last year's Christmas flood memory lingered.

A turnpike collision killed three people and injured three others. E Smith, 21, of Cincinnati a Fort Bragg soldier, along with Ray Martin 49 of Sharon and Leroy Pitzer 54 of Fairview were in separate vehicles. Mrs Kay of Southin and Mrs Mary Pitzer were among the injured. responders took about 25 minutes to remove victims.
