Aircraft Firms Lose Ten Million This Year
Washington report from the Associated Press outlines an operating loss near 100 million dollars for the 1947 aircraft industry. Oliver P. Echols of the Aircraft Industries Association notes losses by 15 major firms will exceed 1946 by about a quarter, with after tax credits over 11.7 million. He says a new national air policy, drawn from the President's Air Policy Commission and the Congressional Aviation Policy Board, could halt two years of deteriorating air power as 1948 begins. Despite losses, 1947 saw a strong year for new plant construction, world speed records, and several commercial flight records. An experimental SS-1 reportedly surpassed sound speed for the first time in 44 years of powered flight. The year produced 1,800 ground aircraft, 195 transports, and 13,000 personal planes valued near one billion dollars, while employment fell by about 30,000 to 173,000.
