Army and WPB Chairman May Differ Again

A congressional source says War Production Board Chairman Donald M Nelson plans to extend civilian jurisdiction over army and navy contract placements, while Army officials resist. Frances Grimes Becomes Ferry Pilot For War Planes

Frances Grimes of Morgantown has been accepted as a ferry command pilot and will soon fly warplanes in transit for the armed services. She trained at Morgantown Municipal Airport and will report to Houston for final checks before joining the ferrying organization. A former state tennis champion in 1935, she is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Bushrod Grimes, now of Richmond Virginia.

Stonega Company Must Pay Back Rentals and Fees

Federal Judge Ben Moore ordered Stonega Coal and Coke to pay $3,496.22 to Samuel Price and others who sued three years ago for back rent on coal lands in Fayette and Raleigh counties. Plaintiffs had a 1940 judgment of $115,000, with subsequent rights affirmed by the circuit court and further awards totaling $21,492.92 in 1941 and $9,496.22 this year. The suit claims the company leased land and abandoned mining without proper notice.

In McKeesport Pennsylvania Private Thomas Halaszynski a 37 year old W B A worker who volunteered last August will spend Christmas at home with his wife and 11 children after his commanding officer at Camp Campbell Kentucky granted a seven day extension to his 10 day furlough The extension came as the officer believed Halaszynski needed a longer leave to be with his larger family There were 10 children when he left and now there are 11 Helen Ann was born eight days ago and the baptism occurred Sunday He would have returned that night without the extension describing the extra furlough as the most welcome Christmas present a fellow ever received.

Two Gamblers Forfeit Bonds Leave Beckley

Police Chief Tommy Roberts said two gamblers arrested earlier this week in Beckley, James Robert Kanade of Coatesville Pennsylvania and Chris Nicholas of Washington DC, forfeited bonds of 33 dollars each and left the city stating they wanted nothing further to do with Beckley. A telegram from Washington DC confirmed they were not wanted elsewhere.
