Slides Plague Beckley Highways After Overnight Rain
Heavy rainfall in the Beckley area caused rock and dirt slides along Rt. 19 41 on Batoff Mountain, blocking half the roadway. SRC supervisor Reedie Bryant said the worst slides hit Friday and Saturday nights and last night, with four truckloads moved from each site. Traffic was restored after crews worked through the night. Snow flurries this morning created slick roads on Flat Top and White Oak mountains. Forecast calls for rain and snow with little new accumulation.

Osteopath Convicted in 12 Manslaughter Counts
Dr. L Weiner an osteopathic psychiatrist in Camden New Jersey was found guilty on 12 counts of manslaughter in the deaths of 12 patients. He was acquitted in three cases and faces sentencing January 11. The jury deliberated 12 hours and 10 minutes after hearing that serum hepatitis from unsanitary equipment or contaminated drugs may have caused the deaths. The defense argued other hepatitis forms but the judge noted the type was not crucial.
