New Sub Station Supplies Power to Sprague Mines

Dillon flu victim dies of pneumonia after influenza
T H Dillon 47 a Raleigh Lumber Beaver store manager died Sunday night from pneumonia contracted during influenza. He had recently returned from Tazewell Va where he aided Ritter Lumber staff while ill. Burial will be in Tazewell with his wife and four children left as survivors.

Mrs. L B Phipps Dies After Illness in Beckley
Mrs Mary Virginia Phipps wife of Luther B Phipps died December 11 at 2 p m at their country home after a brief illness from the influenza plague. Aged 27 she leaves husband three children and parents Mr and Mrs J A Ewart sisters Mrs J Kay and Mrs J M Andrews brothers J C Ewart and E P Ewart. Funeral services were held December 13 at Wildwood cemetery Rev W C Blair officiating. Mrs Phipps long active member of Beckley Presbyterian church was a popular social figure in Beckley.

Nurses and assistants at the emergency influenza hospital in the new Baptist church enjoyed a brief respite after discharging the last patient Monday morning. Bedding was burned and floors scrubbed before an early departure for home, but Tuesday morning brought four new patients from a nearby mining town and four more from Beckley in the afternoon.

Former Beckley Lady Dies at Home in Staunton VA
Mrs. Collins 36 died after influenza and pneumonia in Staunton Va. She is survived by husband and five Staunton children, father Andrew Williams, six sisters and two brothers. She lived in Beckley and Huntington previously, and the Collins family later ran a Prince hotel and became involved in Raleigh County coal interests. Body sent to Huntington and buried Spring Hill cemetery beside her mother.

Mrs James Hewitt wife of engineer at E E White Coal company died Saturday night at 8 from pneumonia after influenza. She was 29 and leaves two children. The Hewitts came to Raleigh County from Richmond Virginia and were notable in Glen White and nearby communities. Burial was in Richmond by Undertaker C C Rose.

Moonshine Plant Busted on Bowyer Creek in Raleigh County
Sheriff W L Foster and five deputies demolish a large illicit distillery on Bowyer Creek. The still held 120 gallons with mash capacity around 1600 gallons and 700 to 800 gallons ready for a run. Officials seized 50 bushels of meat used for liquor and destroyed the entire setup on site. A smaller Beaver raid followed earlier in the week.
