Appointment Made Carman as Eastern Coal Mine Superintendent
Clarence C. Carman named red superintendent of Stotesbury No. 10 mine for Eastern Associated Coal Corp at Helen. He follows Robert W. Thom, who moves to Koppers ton operations. A leading long-wall mining expert, Carman has been production engineer for all Eastern southern West Virginia mines since 1961. He studied electrical engineering at Washington and Lee University and earned a mining engineering degree while teaching for the West Virginia Mining Extension Department. He joined Eastern in 1941 as a mine foreman and belongs to the Professional Engineering Society of West Virginia.

Early Morning Fire Injures 2 in Beckley Home
Beckley Fire Department responded at 2:50 a.m. to 201 Parkway Drive, rescue operations pulled Mrs. John C. Ward, her mother Mrs. Mary Hern, and her son from the second floor. All are in satisfactory condition at Raleigh General Hospital with smoke inhalation. Fire officials cited a gas line leak to a basement water heater as the cause. four hours of firefighting. Mrs. Ward is widow of John C. Ward who died February 24 this year. Damages undetermined.

Robbery Suspect Nabbed In Ohio
Everette Bonds 26 of Cleveland Ohio was captured by Beckley State Police troopers on a breaking and entering charge. He admitted breaking into Jennings TV Shop at MacArthur and was jailed at Raleigh County Jail after transport from Cleveland. About 3000 dollars in televisions stereos and radios were taken on December 5 by Bonds and an unknown accomplice. Police will continue the investigation and seek the partner.

The guide uses phonetic spellings rather than symbols to aid broad use and follows a 1950 WVU journalism class effort with distribution to newspapers radio stations and wire services.

Appalachian Region Institute To Bring Teachers Together
Morgantown WVU will host a five week summer institute for secondary teachers across Appalachia from July 19 to August 20. Dr James B Hickman will direct the program funded by an NSF grant totaling over 50000 dollars. The course combines biology chemistry and earth sciences with four university credits per course and a bi daily seminar. Visiting lecturers and WVU staff will support the program aimed at broadening public scientific knowledge and linking instructors with new approaches.
