Surgeon Rosen to Demonstrate Ear Surgery Behind Bamboo Curtain
Dr Samuel Rosen of New York plans a Jan 1 trip to Peking invited by the Red Chinese Medical Society to demonstrate his ear surgery that restores hearing by acting on the stapes. The technique, developed since 1953, has helped about 14000 patients in 27 nations with about 90 percent success. Rosen notes the operation, done under local anesthesia, can involve bending or replacing the stapes or using a plastic substitute. He recounts having performed it on Ambassador Nehru in Hong Kong and says Mao and Chou were amazed at the ear improvement.
