Trapped in cistern rescued after 24 hours of sand
In Holly Springs Mississippi a 44 year old man Harry Miller Negro was freed from a 20 foot cistern where he had been buried up to his chin for nearly a day. Rescue crews of whites and Negroes worked from noon Tuesday to extract him with ropes and shoring while bystanders watched. Miller remained conscious and calm as he was placed in an ambulance and taken to a hospital with oxygen supplied through a mouth tube. His five children witnessed the scene and a Sheriff called the rescue "the crawliest I have ever seen."
