Spaak resigns over timid policy in European Assembly
Belgian Paul-Henri Spaak quit today as president of the European Assembly in protest against its timid policy after the body proposed a limited international political authority to oversee a projected European army. He vows to devote himself to a united Europe. The assembly can only recommend, not enforce, decisions to member governments. Britain, France, and the United States had differing views during talks with the Soviet Union on disarmament and European unity.
