Hunting Trip Tragedy Kills Mullens Youth on Route 33
In Pendleton County a hunting party from Mullens suffered a fatality and five injuries when a 1951 truck carrying four hunters was rear ended by a 1959 sedan on Route 33 near Oak Flat. Roy Charles Simmons, 19, died. Injured: James K. Powell 23, Gerald D. Neal, James B. Houck, and two occupants of the Hamandy car. All were taken to Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Police say the truck failed to yield while turning and was struck from behind. Powell worked for Norfolk and Western Railway. Houck was Mullens fireman. The group had just arrived in Pendleton for a hunting trip.
