Northeast Snowstorm Grips Great Lakes to New England

United Press International reports a storm center moved across the eastern Great Lakes toward New England bringing heavy snow and hazardous driving. Buffalo already saw over 7 inches with 10 inches likely east of Lakes Erie and Ontario. Gale warnings and strong winds affected the New England coast and upstate New York to New England. A large high pressure system kept icy conditions away from most of the nation. Some Southwest showers and chilly Carolinas to Central Florida, but overall fair and dry elsewhere. Warmer temps expected from Texas to the Lower Mississippi Valley and into the Midwest Southwest.

Cab Driver Hero Of Fire At Apartment Building

Los Angeles cab driver David Glascock spotted smoke at a two story building and rushed inside shouting fire. He helped evacuate 35 people and likely saved lives while firefighters freed the remaining tenants. None of the 60 residents suffered serious injuries.

Settlement Approved in Beckley Auto Accident Case

The Raleigh County Circuit Court approved a $2,500 settlement for 12-year-old John William Acord of Beckley in a suit against Jimmy Bennett for injuries from a September 29, 1968 collision near the Harper Crescent Roads intersection. Meadows' Appeal Denied in Raleigh County Case

D C Meadows of Raleigh County had his felony appeal rejected by the State Supreme Court. He was sentenced from 6 to 10 years on July 22, 1968 for breaking and entering at Rahall Clothing City on South Fayette Street Beckley April 4, 1968 after pleading guilty. The petition claimed rights were denied and that he expected probation. Previous petitions for release were denied by Raleigh County courts. Meadows was arrested with James Carey.
