Rescue operations at the Mattmark Dam paused as Swiss glacier pilot Hermann Geiger dropped 700 pounds of explosives on Allalin Glacier to loosen ice threatening rescuers seeking 99 men killed or missing in the avalanche. The blast, amid gusts and clouds, sent huge ice blocks tumbling as crews recovered six bodies and officials estimated $9 million in machinery losses. Forty tourists escaped. fatalities included Italians, Swiss, Spaniards, Germans, Austrians, and a Yugoslav.

Kanawha Port May Be Used In Fog Experiment
United Airlines plans to use Kanawha Airport to test fog clearing by seeding with dry ice. County officials, Air National Guard, and FAA will meet with W B Beckwith, UAL chief meteorologist, to discuss tests likely starting in November or December if approved. Beckwith notes limited effectiveness in warm fog and cites past tests in Salt Lake City and Medford with 135 flights and 3,200 passengers carried on 28 seed days last year.

Medicare Information Kits Due In Few Days

Vecellio and Grogan Inc of Beckley submitted the apparent low bid for grading and draining on the Three Forks to Bolt Road project at 2,766.534.24 dollars. The State Road Commission announced this today after bid openings in Charleston for six projects totaling 8.9 million dollars the largest single letting in 1965. Eight counties are involved as four new construction contracts cover 8.76 miles of highway including one major interstate bridge and four other structures. Through 1965 lettings the SRC has opened apparent low bids totaling over 47 million dollars.
