Wind Storm Hits Beckley Area Killing Cow and Wrecking Crops
A wind and storm swept through Beckley and surrounding areas leveling crops in the lower county and uprooting several trees. A cow owned by Frank Albanese was killed when a falling tree broke its back. Lightning damaged two windows at C F Jackson’s home and tomato plants in his garden. Power lines were down on Johnstown road and Lincoln street. service was restored by noon. Weatherman Luther Mauck reported .47 inches of rain, tempering the day from 90 to 60 degrees. Route 3 travelers saw corn fields leveled in Coal River, and Glen Daniel reported trees blown over. Flat Top observer Miss Bess Lilly noted .53 inches of rain but no other damage. Telegraph and telephone services were intermittent but resumed. Coastal and southern counties faced general storms with flowers and small gardens beaten down. In Huntington, gale force winds and heavy rain uprooted trees and shattered plate glass windows.
