Wilkins argues unity not needed in civil rights movement
NAACP Executive Secretary Roy Wilkins told a Steubenville news conference there is no greater unity problem among civil rights groups than within religious denominations. He urged not to unite all groups under one program and criticized the term black power as an unfortunate phrase with many definitions. He warned the fair housing bill is weakened by eliminating single family units and compared it unfavorably to bills in New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. He spoke at a Fort Steuben Hotel dinner with about 400 attendees, after earlier talks in Weirton. Wilkins praised West Virginia University for desegregation efforts and noted his long leadership with the NAACP since 1955.
