Convention Special Hope Reborn LBJ Can Win Dixie By BRUCE BIOSSAT
Washington correspondent Bruce Biossat reports that Democratic leaders at the 1964 convention seek a cautious Southern strategy for LBJ. A civil rights plank without major new legislation and a soft approach to Alabama and Mississippi seating disputes aim to appeal to Southern voters. Tests across states show Johnson gaining ground in several Deep South states, though Goldwater remains strong in Virginia and Florida. Johnson may lead a party favored by farm subsidies, welfare, and education boosts, potentially securing Southern support despite Goldwater’s regional strength.
