Opinion on Burial Fees in County Jails
Charleston article reports an official ruling that county courts may pay medical expenses for prisoners only with legal authority, while burial costs fall under the county welfare department. The opinion notes a 1947 statute authorizes medical expenses but not burial expenses and states welfare can spend up to 150 dollars for pauper burials. The case concerns a jailed woman who died after an accident while awaiting a hearing, with medical costs totaling 1251 dollars and burial costs 897 dollars.
