Students Stay In Grade School While Parents Get DPA Checks

A Raleigh County board hearing revealed concerns from a Terry delegation that some children return to Terry School after graduation so their parents can keep receiving Department of Public Assistance checks. The board will investigate with Deputy Superintendent Dewey Bone and report to Superintendent Sherman Trail. Other items included requests for an additional teacher, playground, and transport for Terry high school students, talks on bus routes, and consideration of indoor toilets for Bacontown School. The board approved seven school bus sales, closings of Mills Branch and Sam's Branch elementary schools, and two bus transportation contracts. Virgil Sarrett proposed a merit diploma and revised graduation credits to emphasize classroom work and require semester exams.
