Millionaire industrialist Howard J. Samuels, 47, is expected to be named soon as undersecretary of commerce by President Johnson. Samuels was an unsuccessful candidate for New York lieutenant governor in 1966.
James Franklin Reeves 53 of Sophia dies at Pierpont Bines Beckley Coals after heart attack. Survivors include wife Florence Reeves and multiple children and siblings. Bodies/arrangements at local funeral homes pending. Also notices for David William Miller 92 Crab Orchard and Joseph Leo Hurley 68 Hinton with service plans and survivors listed.
Congolese mobs estimated at about 2000 attacked the Belgian embassy, burned furniture, and toppled a statue of King Albert amid protests over Congo turmoil. Fred Knight 58 of Spring Ridge Braxton County is jailed on malicious wounding. prosecutor William Kidd said a murder charge would be filed soon. Ott was shot in the head with a small caliber gun about a month ago.
West Virginia’s congressional delegation announced the Economic Development Administration approved a $149,500 loan to Standard Printing and Publishing Co. of Huntington. Headed by Robert McDonough the firm plans to create 23 new jobs and fund $230,000 in new machinery and equipment to modernize the plant.
