880 000 Given Polio Vaccine in Canadian Clinics
Canada launched a nationwide polio immunization program using the Salk vaccine after an April 12 report of at least 60 percent effectiveness. Connaught Laboratory in Toronto produced vaccine with a $1.50 dose, and provinces shared costs. By late June 880,000 children had at least two shots, with hopes to inoculate millions more by March 31. The plan included provincial control, distribution by age, and eventual resumption of imports from U.S. sources as the program expanded.
