National Expert Urges Beckley Playground Upgrades
Harold J. Weekley, a national community war services representative, says Beckley must spend 7500 to 6000 annually on playgrounds to reach the national standard of one dollar per resident. He visited Beckley and surrounding areas finding new playgrounds badly needed and urges tennis courts swimming pools street showers picnic tables and hard surfaced courts. He proposes studying other cities plans and a one week training program for teachers through area colleges to supply trained supervisors. Weekley also recommends a larger recreation board more women, use of churches and schools as community centers, and a trained city park supervisor. The Beckley council previously appropriated 1500 for playgrounds and seeks Weekley’s survey this fall for next year.
