Search for burning ship off Venezuela called off
The Coast Guard ended the search for a vessel reportedly aflame off the Venezuelan coast after a Royal Netherlands air force patrol found only a mother ship and a smaller hunter boat with bright lights. Aimed at verifying the blaze, six merchant ships and a Navy store ship were asked to alter course, but the Dutch plane’s failure to locate a fire led officials to cancel the operation. The alert began after an Argentine passenger plane reported seeing a burning hulk about 120 miles north of Curacao and 300 miles south-southwest of San Juan, with SOS flashes observed from small boats prior to the rest. The Coast Guard said the crew may have abandoned ship and that lights may have been mistaken for a fire.
