Hamrick Purchases Rakes Grocery Becomes Brady's Grocery
Brady Allen Hamrick of Crab Orchard now owns Rakes Grocery at Beaver. The store, run by John Rakes for 15 years, closed last fall but reopened last month as Brady's Grocery offering clock and watch repair and ring sizing. Open daily 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Rakes operates an Esso station beneath the underpass at Raleigh. Sophia’s cafe, Mary’s Cafe, opens early and serves three meals daily with sandwiches, cakes, pies, and corn bread. The Buttricks run Mary’s Cafe with help from Mrs. Crawford and Theresa Buttrick. The area also features a new barber shop combining Phia and Wessie Walker in Midway near Sophia Finance Co. and a renovation of the Sweet Shop building. Approximately 125 employees from five states attend the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens picnic in Bass Lake, Hinton.
