Field of 18 Seen For Hambletonian
GOSHEN N Y A bulky field of 14 starters, second largest in the history of the race, was indicated for the 24th Hambletonian Stake Wednesday. The latest check through the barns at this home of harness racing's blue ribbon trotting event brought up the names of four additional horses not previously considered as possible candidates for the $67,000 classic. If all known candidates face the barrier, it will be the largest field since a record 19 pounded around the kite shaped mile track in 1945 when Titan Hanover won in two straight heats. Latest to come into consideration are Penelope Hanover owned by Kenneth Dale Owen of Houston Tex Prince Comet owned by Dave Slesnick Washington IPa Rosamond Gib White Lexington Ky and St. Clair CW Phellis Greenwich Conn. St. Clair is a bay son of Spencer Iscott which grabbed the 1940 Hambletonian for Phellis. Phellis also is the owner of Miss Tilly champion two year old filly of lash season and winter book favorite with Bangaway for Wednesdays classic. Bangaway however still remains the probable post time favorite. The volomite colt owned by C M Saunders of Toledo Ohio warmed up for his task by beating five other Hambletonian candidates Friday night in a one mile trot at Roosevelt Raceway.

Bowl Game Curbs Studied by NCAA
Nine college athletic teachers from various sections of the Nation form the 1949 NCAA bowl game committee. They will draft rules on sponsors management participation and promotion to be submitted to convention delegates in New York January 11 13. The plan aims to apply to all 394 NCAA member schools and may outlaw some of the smaller bowls while ensuring advertised charity games truly benefit a charity.
