Guffey Measure S May Be Changed In House Group

The Associated Press reports that amendments to strengthen the Guffey coal bill were released to stimulate public reaction. The plan adds a national bituminous coal commission with wage, hours, fair trade provisions and price controls, includes a consumers council, and hearings to ensure districts are not harmed by price setting.

Three WV Counties Back Liquor Referendums in Local Votes

Three West Virginia counties held special local option elections on liquor sales under the state control act. In Ritchie county most precincts reported 3 177 to 612 against liquor with McFarlan town voting for it. Grant county showed about three to one against liquor in eight of fourteen precincts. The eastern panhandle county reported 654 against to 235 for liquor stores in eight precincts. Upshur county yielded 2 091 against and 944 for in 19 of 37 precincts. Missing precincts are rural and will be tabulated today. All three counties opposed repeal of the prior prohibition amendment.

Fire breaks out in engine room of cruiser Quincy

A five hour battle extinguished a fire in the engine room of the recently launched U. S. S. Quincy in Quincy Massachusetts. Deck plates were too hot for officials to descend and assess damage.

Whitesville Votes To Incorporate As Town

Whitesville voters approve incorporation in a special election by 231 to 127. The move aims to speed water and sewer system plans funded with W P A money and to elect a mayor and councilmen and other officials.

Two Raleigh General nurses pass Charleston exam

Miss Dorothy Toney and Miss Sally Swope, graduates at Raleigh General hospital, were notified they passed examinations given in Charleston by the state board of nurses examiners. Graduation exercises will be held at the local hospital on August 10.

Pittsburgh Aug 7 The burned and unclad body of Willard J Hollinger 40 a utility company employee was found today after a fire in a fashionable Mount Lebanon apartment house.

Levy Proposals Put Beckley on Tight Municipal Budget

County Court and Board of Education endorse a top levy of 1.01 for class four property as Beckley faces a 20,000 budget with scant funds for streets sewers and lights. City records show apportionments across classes and a state tax commissioner approval pending. Rainelle Woman Held As Killer

Rainelle, West Virginia. Connie Beller of East Rainelle faced a first degree murder charge for the poisoning death of her 13 year old stepson Lloyd Beller. The March death followed consumption of home made candy. other Beller children also fell ill but recovered at Hinton hospital.

Allotment Cut Triggers Relief Staff Reductions

County relief officials announced a 25 percent cut in staff as state relief funds shrink by 24 000 for August. E W Worrell Jr said 12 of 48 positions would go, with unfilled vacancies kept to a minimum and focus on retaining those most in need. New enrollments seek 167 C C C applicants plus 12 percent for rejections to meet quotas, while medical relief may be trimmed to bolster direct aid.

Sheriff Quick Escape Averts Mob in Indiana

Sheriff Fred Rodgers sped away with Frank Nace, a 50-year-old man accused of attacking a nine year old girl, after a mob gathered at Clinton County jail. Rodgers loaded an automobile with machine guns and tear gas bombs and drove to Marion County jail for safety.

Tillen Wiseman a 34 year old motorman's helper was brought to Beckley hospital early this morning after a motor ran over him injuring his right leg severely above the knee. The incident description notes the limb was mangled by the impact.

Moonshine raid nets two men in Mercer County

Federal Alcohol Tax unit officers arrested William Randolph Hufford and Willie Hubbard for operating a 125 gallon moonshine still near Lake Shawnee. Both were detained after a raid at the Bluestone river site. Hufford fled into the river and Hubbard was captured along the riverbank. Hubbard on parole faced 2500 dollar bond. Hufford held for federal action with 1000 dollar bond.

Three Arrested On Theft Count In Laurel Creek Robbery

Mike and William Howard Adkins and cousin Burell Clemons are charged with breaking and entering the Laurel Creek store on July 6. The trio, arrested after a weeklong probe by Constable Frank E. Lemon and Conservator T. W. Harmon, confessed to the burglary and to carrying away three sacks of merchandise after breaking through a basement wall. About $25 in goods was recovered.

Floods Cause Wide Damage Across WV Ohio and PA

Flood waters from heavy rain flooded dozens of communities in West Virginia Ohio and Pennsylvania. Vines Succumbs In East Beckley

A C Vines, 65, who moved to Beckley from Princeton a year and a half ago, died yesterday afternoon at 4 30 at his home near the Sylvia school in East Beckley due to a heart condition after prolonged illness. Funeral services will be Thursday at 1 pm at the Holiness church in East Beckley led by Reverend G R June and Reverend J T Baker, with burial at Oak Grove cemetery. Keyser Funeral Home in charge. he is survived by his widow and no other near relatives.
