Raleigh County juries for the August circuit term were drawn with 14 names listed as duty reporters. The term opens August 28, with 7 men selected to report for duty and others set for consideration of chancery matters during the first week.
Mabscott council approves a higher budget of 47,160 for next year while lowering the tax rate. The plan increases police salaries and street lighting but cuts attorneys’ fees, with revenue from a tax levy and other receipts expected to cover most expenditures.
John Wes Pfe, 19, of Terry, the first Raleigh County soldier killed in the Korean War, died of a heart attack while in service. Funeral services are set, with burial at Sunset Memorial Park. He attended Elkton High School, enlisted Jan. 5 for a three-year term, and is survived by his mother Anna Foster and several siblings and step-relatives. Active pallbearers are named and services to be conducted at Rose Funeral Home.
The New River NAACP branch meets at 7 p m at Carlisle Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Austin hosting. Miss Louise McGue of Princeton is soloist and appears at several forthcoming NAACP sponsored events with accompanying musicians.
Funeral services for Raymond Harrison Nelson of Killarney will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Sugar Grove Baptist Church, with burial in Slimp's Creek Cemetery. Nelson, 25, died Friday in a local hospital of leukemia. he was born April 10, 1925, and survived by his wife Betty Mullins Nelson and multiple siblings and half-siblings. he worked for C. H. Mead Coal Company.
Captain Wyatt Gay of the U S Army and Air Force Main Recruiting station announced pre induction physicals for draftees will be held at the Beckley Organized Reserve Corps armory on North Oakwood Avenue. Draftees from about 12 counties will be bused to the Medical Art Laboratory for X rays and blood tests then returned for final processing. Counties include Raleigh Fayette Greenbrier Summers Monroe Nicholas Boone Mercer Wyoming McDowell and possibly Mingo. The National Geographic Society notes Hans Meyer, in 1889, first scaled Africa's 19 565 foot Kibo peak.
D. W. Bryson, Raleigh County superintendent, said two new 66 passenger pusher buses will be picked up at the Lima body factory this weekend. A pair of similar buses already purchased should be ready for delivery by September 5, when school opens.
Listed items include attorneys fees and court costs totaling 300, salaries and wages for street employees 4330, new equipment 700, construction of streets sidewalks and sewers 300, materials supplies and street department costs 600, tax commissioner audit 75, parks and playgrounds expenses 150, officials' trailing and car expenses 125, and contingent expenses 650.
Keith Bailes reports that 1,136 veterans received aid through the Local Veterans Administration in July. Services included 1,030 personal contacts, 937 telephone contacts, 430 referrals, 299 pieces of correspondence, 430 advertisements on selective service, and 28 vocational advisements.
