FDA Bans Cattle Feed Additive DES Effect on Slaughtered Meat
The FDA ordered an immediate halt to producing the cancer causing chemical diethylstilbestrol DES as a cattle feed additive. Farmers and manufacturers have five months to close out existing stocks. The ban follows new Agriculture Department data showing residues in animal livers at slaughter could pose risks. The move aims to prevent DES residues in meat while allowing a gradual transition and deter costs to producers and consumers.
