Low polio inoculation rate cited as luck in state
Lincoln County turnout for mass polio vaccinations has officials worried that the low polio incidence this year hinges on luck. Health Director N. H. Dyer cites 5,000 residents needing booster shots or full series, with only 1,455 treated July 24 and 25. The state urges 80 percent inoculation to break transmission, notes about 60 percent under 21 are immunized, and warns luck alone may not conquer polio given recent Texas outbreak and 1961 experience.
