Republicans accuse Democrats of irresponsible conduct for failing to select delegates by legal methods. Hazardous and slipshod reporting warned of mass conventions required 30 days before the state convention, says Republican Chairman Truman L. Sayre, who also claims the conventions were not held on time.
Beckley native Lt. Richard L. Thompson commands television gear aboard the submarine Seadragon bound for an east west crossing beneath the North Pole. Seadragon sails from Portsmouth New Hampshire with 97 crew and seven civilian technicians. Thompson plans to televise the journey and will be at sea about a month before the ship moves to Pearl Harbor Hawaii. His wife Natalie Smith and their infant Leslie will join him in Hawaii.
In Bucharest Blanche Thebom became the first American singer to perform Carmen behind the Iron Curtain. The Met star stunned Romanian audiences with a provocative portrayal, drawing cheers and a dinner from the Romanian Artists Guild. AP report from Washington notes the FBI has no active inquiry into the disappearance of two NSA junior mathematicians from Ft Meade who departed June 24 for a West Coast vacation and reportedly headed to Mexico City. They have not contacted families or the agency since departing. Authorities found they registered in Mexico City but later left. no federal law violation indicated.
McDowell County miners plan to raise welfare pensions drawn from coal royalties. George J. Titler, UMWA District 29 president, calls the move fantastic and utterly impossible. Wil ford Dickerson proposes monthly contributions to fund a pension and hospitalization for thousands of idle miners. He says a convention vote will reject the plan as unworkable, though he proceeds through proper channels. Samuel Goddard is mentioned in a transitional note.
Havana AP reports Cuba silent on Fidel Castro’s successor with Raul Castro the favored option. Fidel’s prime minister role was paused after a three week illness described as a lung infection, as Maj Raul Trillo said he would undergo a complete physical and mental test.
A Charleston woman told police she was assaulted at a drive in theater while with her daughter. Two men approached from another car. one threatened her with a brick and the other seized the daughter, a 10 year old, and stole the money she had. Police chased the suspects and arrested Harold Lawrence, about 40, of Charleston, on a reported incident charge.
The FTC ordered Arthur Murray Studios to end phony contests and high pressure sales of dance instruction. Arthur Murray Inc. and officials Arthur Murray Kathryn Murray and David Teichman along with licensed studio operators were named. The firm says it settled without admitting violation and has agreed to a code of ethics for licensed studios.
A tank truck carrying hydrochloric acid and caustic soda ran out of control down Backbone Mountain between Luke and Bowling Green, crashing into a parked pulpwood truck and killing two West Virginia drivers, Glenn Snyder and Thomas Lee Farmer. Injured driver Olen McDonald. The incident halted near the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co. plant as emergency crews responded.

He plans statewide outreach to Democratic candidates, promises a drafted platform, and aims to keep WV in step with progressive states while highlighting his conservation and severance tax advocacy. Raleigh County reports a brighter financial outlook as total property valuations climb by 1.803 million dollars for the current fiscal year. The county budget adds roughly 66.9 thousand for schools and projects including Stephen's Branch Lake, with 1960 valuations totaling 104.689 million versus 102.885 million in 1959, driven by increases across real estate and personal property classes.
Police across East Tennessee hunted Clarence Leon Raby 26 for the murder of Union County deputy sheriff Ben DeVault and an Anderson County merchant. In a gun battle with Knox County deputies, Kaley and Dan Cooper were killed or wounded as officers pursued Raby. The suspect had commandeered a truck from Fred Rutherford and fled after DeVault and Lloyd DeVault tried to stop him.

Picketing at Beckley projects had ceased for days awaiting the meeting. unions vow to continue the struggle though no plans were disclosed. No pickets were seen at most sites today.
