Frank King, warden of Matdensville Medium Security Prison, was dismissed by Gov Arch Cloorey. A spokesman said an announcement would name King’s successor at a 2 pm news conference today. King had served as warden since 196.
UPI reports Spiro Agnew remained below other leaders as federal pay raises passed for senators and congressmen but stalled for the vice president. The Senate approved $12,500 to $42,500 for lawmakers. Agnew’s raise to $62,500 was pigeonholed, keeping his salary at $43,000 temporarily. House Republicans moved to repeal a 41 percent self-raise while petitions gathered slowly.
A 19th century tobacco farm site in Manhattan was named a landmark by the city landmarks commission. The piece traces colonial shifts from Suppokanican lands to Dutch, then British control, and notes later tensions with residents and artists in the area.
Senate GOP Leader Dirksen says President Nixon does not plan a large civil rights package now but may seek expanded enforcement against job discrimination. President Nixon told the U S Chamber crowd that there can be no compromise with lawlessness on campuses. He defended peaceful dissent while condemning intimidation, violence and possession of weapons in classrooms, urging faculties and trustees to stand firm.

A toading machine operator, Jesse W. Baldwin, 48, of Cavings Harrison County, was killed Tuesday in a crushing accident at Consolidation Coal Corp Kilavm section of the Montaineer No HA Mine. The incident was reported by United Press International.
President and Mrs. Nixon host a White House birthday tribute for jazz icon Duke Ellington, with guests including Gerry Mulligan and Dave Brubeck. Ellington improvises a song dedicated to Mrs. Nixon as the event features his own compositions and a Medal of Freedom presentation.

Dwight Bhannon Banks age 20 of Bluefield tells a Bluefield jury he had no role in the November bombing of the Bluefield State College gymnasium that caused twenty thousand dollars in damages. He says he was in a dormitory room when dynamite was handed and notes that William Travis earlier faced a conspiracy conviction. Banks remains on trial as proceedings resume.
Joe Lengyel administrator of Bernice Lengyel's estate sues Creil Hale for 111 500 in damages after Bernice Lengyel died in a wreck on West Virginia Route 3 near Seth Boone County on December 9 1967. The complaint seeks 1500 funeral expenses and 110000 in financial loss and requests a jury trial. Lengyel is represented by Robert B Sayre. Bernice Lengyel is survived by a son and daughter.
The French left parties failed to unite behind a single candidate after De Gaulle’s resignation. Alain Poher, interim president and leading Centrist hope, indicated no rush to declare. The Communist led CGT canceled May Day parades citing a Gallicist plot to provoke riots, with Lyons following suit.

Ex convict and founder of the Mission Rebels Reverend Jesse J. Tames was arrested Tuesday for loitering near a high school. Police say he was exhorting youths to go to school with foul language while defending his actions as helping underprivileged kids.
