Mount Hope Lions Club will honor the outstanding father of Mount Hope at a June 10 meeting. A three member committee will select the father who will attend and receive several awards. The club also discussed garden projects amid food shortages in Europe and reported a successful spring dance.

Mt Hope Band Drives for Membership After Strong Festival Showing

Mt Hope High School Band earned the second highest rating at the Fayette County Band Festival in Oak Hill. Director David Carter told the Mount Hope Band Boosters Club on Wednesday night the membership drive runs through May 5 with a club meeting to report on finances and membership. The town is split into sections to recruit new members, aiming to double enrollment, said president W L Burrus, who called the response outstanding and predicted the group will be a powerhouse behind the band.

Favors Liberal Man As Nation's Leader

Oak Hill candidate Rufus C. Hurt seeks delegate at large to the Republican national convention and pledges to back a liberal middle of the road President if elected. Hurt is unopposed for Fayette County sheriff, leads the Oak Hill Chamber of Commerce, runs a bus line and two airports, and heads the Fayette County Young Republican League. He has long been active in Southern West Virginia politics and in 1946 narrowly lost the Third District Congressional nomination by 170 votes to Fal Rohrbough.

Free Sunday morning rides from Oak Hill transit

Oak Hill Transit Company offers free transportation for residents of Summerlee Lochgelly East End and Summerlee Road to Sunday worship at Oak Hill Churches. Buses depart the city bus terminal at 9:00 a.m. via the golf course, circle East End, and reach the church at 9:45 a.m. Return trips depart the terminal at 12:20 p.m.

Absentee Ballot Requests Held Until May 1 in Fayette

Fayette County Circuit Clerk Mrs L S Tully reports several absentee ballot applications received for voters likely to be outside West Virginia during the primary. Ballots may be sent starting May 1 and written applications must be in by that date. Voters absent on election day may vote in person May 1 through 7, with ballots mailed to precincts for counting on election day.

Burial for infant sons of Chief Petty Officer Meyer

The infant sons of Chief Petty Officer and Mrs. G. J. Meyer died Wednesday at the naval hospital in Portsmouth Virginia and will be buried in Sunset Memorial Park. iMan Pays Checks: Obtains Release

T. K. Johnson charged with two counts of forgery made the checks good and was released from Raleigh County jail. Johnson, returned from Parkersburg, allegedly gave two bogus checks for 20 and 15 dollars to Merbert C. Lawson. At a hearing before Justice G. O. Mills Johnson agreed to pay the bad checks. He was arrested by Parkersburg police and held for W. W. Brammer deputy sheriff.
