Coal Contract Ratified Amid Miner Resistance in Appalachia
Pittsburgh dispatch reports mixed progress as United Mine Workers seek ratification of a new coal contract with producers. The deal could grant immediate pay raises and machinists and electricians extra cents, but many miners remain on strike, with West Virginia District 6 and Pennsylvania District 4 showing the strongest resistance. Some 15,000 returned to work in West Virginia after agreement with BC OA, while broader ratification awaited across several states. A past wildcat strike in District 4 last September idleied 10,000 workers in four states, underscoring ongoing tensions with UMW leadership.
