Partly cloudy this afternoon through Saturday with scattered thunderstorms. Lows near mid 50s, highs in the 80s, with a warm Saturday and cooling Sunday. Four Large Steel Firms Set May 10 Plea Dates

U S Attorney Morgenthau says four major steel producers will plead May 10 to charges of price fixing and bid rigging on federal contracts. Indictments allege illegal price fixing in forged steel sales to the Army Navy electrical firms and others dating back to 1948. Also named are five executives and a trade association. Conviction could bring fines up to 50000 dollars.

Two Found Alive After Alaska Copter Crash

Two men were found alive in Bethel Alaska after a crash as eight bodies were recovered. M Sat James T Active of Bethel and Sgt John Fannin Jr of De Ritter La were taken to Navy Health Service Hospital in satisfactory condition. An unidentified Alaskan native guided rescuers to a drilling site 14 miles northwest of the crash. The downed copter and a second helicopter carried Army advisors to the National Guard visit.

Monsanto Nitro Plant Wins NSC Safety Honor

The Monsanto Chemicals Co plant at Nitro won the National Safety Council top award for 3,294,000 man hours without a time lost accident between February 1959 and August 13, 1961. The Belle plant of Diamond Alkali and Union Carbide plants in South Charleston and Diamond also received NSC awards. Two television stations and one others mentioned.

Cost Of Hair Cut Rises In Beckley

Beckley barber shops raise prices Tuesday after Beckley Barbers Union Local 975 approved a 25 cent increase. Regular haircuts go to 1.50 and flat tops to 1.75, aligning Beckley with typical charges. C C Herald, union member, said the change applies to all union shops and some nonmembers. the move was finalized after the April 12 meeting led by Tom Rose, president of Beckley Local.

Five Nashville Deaths Said Mother's Doing

An investigator said a 38 year old mother shot and killed her husband two children and mother in law then set fire to their house to cover the crime. She then killed herself, he said. Benton York 39 an insurance salesman his wife Velma his invalid mother Mrs Lette Plake 74 and two children Don 4 Benny 14 were found dead in the house by firefighters.\\\\nFire Lt Howard Boyd said he thought Mrs York who once taught a children's Bible class killed the family then pulled the trigger of a 38 caliber revolver which ended her life. The York family was known to be financially pressed.

State's Retraining Fund Amount To Be Known Next Week

West Virginia officials expect to learn next week how much federal money will be allotted for a national manpower training program. S. D. McMillen says the exact figure depends on a Congressio nal formula and requires Washington guidance before state totals can be set. The plan funds up to 52 weeks of retraining for unemployed workers with federal cover for two years, then joint state funding in year three and beyond. It targets displaced workers, job seekers, and youths across West Virginia’s counties.

Record Racket Link Sought In Chicago Killings

Police link nightclub singer Nikki North husband Phillip Scavo and two others to a possible counterfeit record racket. Victims Phillip Seavo, Ronald Seavo, and Lydia Abshire were found shot in Elmwood Park. Pamphlets for North’s songs cost him his life as authorities pursue a Cleveland based AB&F Records connection.

West Virginia Governor Barron stated the Centennial Commission aims for six objectives in 1963 development. They include pride in West Virginia, stronger industry and commerce, expanded tourism, reshaped national image, reduced sectionalism, and forum to discuss state problems. Bomb tests continue in Pacific series Operation Dominic

The United States detonated its second nuclear device in the Pacific as part of Operation Dominic near Christmas Island. Bluefield Moves to Replace Striking City Workers

Bluefield will replace 33 street department workers who stayed off their jobs after an ultimatum to return by 7 a.m. Thursday. Union rep Gaal Nedry says the situation remains unchanged and workers will return only after the city recognizes United Mine Workers District 50 and negotiates a contract. City Manager Randolph Whittle discusses possibly hiring a private firm to handle garbage collection, now in its third day.

State Tax Take Tops Estimates

State Tax Commissioner C Howard Hardesty Jr said revenues from the new personal income tax could exceed prior estimates by about 500000. The tax, enacted by the 1961 Legislature, was projected to yield 18.5 million over five quarters starting January 1, 1961. He noted receipts may at least equal or exceed the estimate.

Three Die In Plant Flames At Philo Ohio Ferro Alloy Plant

Three workmen died from burns after a flare up at the Philo plant of the Ohio Ferro-Alloys Co. near Zanesville. Kenneth Jasper 40 and Michael Soter 46, both from Zanesville, succumbed in Bethesda Hospital Thursday night. Henry R. Gibbs 61 of Philo died early today.
