UPI reports Cuban exile pilots flew a twin engine craft to Havana outskirts and dropped bombs after failing to locate a target. Refugee sources indicate a secret Caribbean base supplied the raid, the first since April 1961, with two men aboard and uncertain air defense response.
UPI reports the U S Embassy in Amman warned Americans to stay off the streets and stock emergency supplies as riots by Nasser supporters stir concern. Western embassies echoed calls to prepare for possible sieges while Egypt Syria and Iraq consider forming a federal state.
West Virginia speed limits on I 64 77 and 81 are raised to 70 mph the highest allowed under a 1963 legislation. The State Road Commission says most of the Interstate system will have 70 mph limits. Previously 55 mph was the maximum by law.

Potential recount requests loom, including Ward IV where C. E. Parsons trailed by two votes and Ward I where H. E. Melton beat Robert P. McLean by 18.

Rescue teams struggled to reach 22 trapped miners after a Thursday night explosion at the Wharton No 2 coal mine in Barrett West Virginia. Officials feared the blast was caused by methane gas or coal dust with two entry paths sealed by rock from the collapse. Relatives gathered at the mine office as foremen and survivors described the intense blast and rapid surface escape.
UP I report lists 22 missing and trapped Clinchfield Coal Co officials and dependents after an explosion at No 2 mine. Names include Aldrich Baker Badorrek Bullough Burnside Cabo Chapman Crayton Fincham Fowler Gregg Hanna Haught Hawkinberry Kerns Lester Maxwell McCloy Reed Smith Swiger Welch and two Haught brothers. Chapman is brother of mine superintendent Harry Chapman.

Mrs B B Richmond of 312 North Kanawha Street died in a local hospital at noon after a short illness. She is mother to Dr William Fred Richmond and Dr B B Richmond of Beckley. Body remains at Keyser Bryant Funeral Home awaiting completion of arrangements.

UPI reports the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen authorized a strike starting 6 am Monday on the Wheeling and Lake Erie district of Nickel Plate Railroad. In Birmingham, Rev. Martin Luther King and ten other integrationists were found guilty of contempt of court for violating an injunction against anti segregation demonstrations. Each defendant faces five days in jail starting May 16 and a $50 fine for defiance.
