Speed Limit Raised to 70 on WV Interstates

West Virginia speed limits on I 64 77 and 81 are raised to 70 mph the highest allowed under a 1963 legislation. The State Road Commission says most of the Interstate system will have 70 mph limits. Previously 55 mph was the maximum by law.

Bodies Found Upstate Mine Tragedy Unfolds

Rescue teams struggled to reach 22 trapped miners after a Thursday night explosion at the Wharton No 2 coal mine in Barrett West Virginia. Officials feared the blast was caused by methane gas or coal dust with two entry paths sealed by rock from the collapse. Relatives gathered at the mine office as foremen and survivors described the intense blast and rapid surface escape.

Mrs Richmond Dies In Short Illness

Mrs B B Richmond of 312 North Kanawha Street died in a local hospital at noon after a short illness. She is mother to Dr William Fred Richmond and Dr B B Richmond of Beckley. Body remains at Keyser Bryant Funeral Home awaiting completion of arrangements.

All-State Band Tour Fund Set

The Centennial Commission approved a $7,000 budget to fund a tour of the All-State Band and All-State Chorus across five states and the District of Columbia, with concerts in Maryland Pennsylvania Ohio Virginia and Kentucky after a Water Gate Theater appearance. It also authorized $5,000 for the labor committee handling AFL-CIO participation and announced the Centennial trade dollar will be plastic due to federal metal restrictions.

United Press International notes 770 deaths in West Virginia mines since 1869. It cites Monongah on December 6, 1907 with 361 deaths, Eccles on April 28, 1914 with 181, Benwood on April 28, 1924 with 119, Bartley on January 10, 1940 with 91, and Logan on March 8, 1960 with 18. The world’s worst in Manchuria’s Honkeiko Colliery on April 26, 1942 killed 1,549. It also lists other notable tolls including Courrieres, France, 1,060 deaths on March 10, 1906 and later incidents at Carmichaels, Bishop, Terre Haute, Pittston, Herrin.

Trainmen authorize strike over work rules on Nickel Plate district

UPI reports the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen authorized a strike starting 6 am Monday on the Wheeling and Lake Erie district of Nickel Plate Railroad. In Birmingham, Rev. Martin Luther King and ten other integrationists were found guilty of contempt of court for violating an injunction against anti segregation demonstrations. Each defendant faces five days in jail starting May 16 and a $50 fine for defiance.
