Roads and homesteads mix in Pioneer era plan
Besaco’s Squire Meadows suggests settling homesteaders near highways and hiring them to beautify sections of road. He envisions grass, cleaned ditches, flowers, and even animal wardens, funded by small state payments and supervised by existing agencies. He argues such work would aid families and improve America’s roads. A Raleigh street brawl ends with taxi driver and passenger walking away, while Professor Joseph B. McKnight retires after 43 years at the University of Gib.
